Food Planet Prize 2025

  • 17 Jun 2025

On 13th June 2025, a revolutionary fertiliser technology developed by Swedish startup NitroCapt, which uses air and plasma instead of fossil fuels, won the $2 million Food Planet Prize 2025 for its climate-friendly innovation.

  • The technology uses green electricity to oxidise nitrogen in the air with plasma, eliminating the need for fossil fuels in fertiliser production.
  • This process drastically reduces the greenhouse gas emissions associated with conventional nitrogen fertilisers, which are currently responsible for approximately 2.7 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions.
  • The innovation is positioned to significantly disrupt the global nitrogen fertiliser industry, which plays a critical role in food production but also contributes carbon emissions equivalent to the entire aviation sector.
