DNPA Demands Copyright Safeguards in AI Training

  • 23 Jun 2025

On 21st June 2025, the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) urged the Indian government to enforce copyright protections for news content used in training Artificial Intelligence models.

  • DNPA’s statement comes as part of its contribution to a government-led review on the intersection of AI and copyright, conducted by a special committee under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
  • The committee, formed in April 2025 and headed by DPIIT Secretary Himani Pande, held its initial meetings on June 19 and 20 to discuss concerns from stakeholders across the media and tech sectors.
  • DNPA expressed strong opposition to the unauthorised use of digital news content by generative AI tools, arguing that using such material for training or applications like search assistance without consent amounts to copyright infringement.
  • The association called for a legal framework that guarantees fair compensation for digital content creators and recognises their ownership rights in an evolving AI-driven information economy.
