On 1st July 2025, the Indian Navy will commission INS Tamal, its newest stealth multi-role frigate, at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia, marking a milestone in Indo-Russian defence collaboration.

  • INS Tamal is the eighth Krivak-class frigate inducted from Russia and the second in the upgraded Tushil class after the Talwar and Teg-class vessels.
  • Tamal features 26% indigenous components, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, reinforcing India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India defence initiatives.
  • Equipped with vertically launched surface-to-air missiles, anti-submarine rockets, improved 100 mm naval guns, EO/IR systems, and heavyweight torpedoes, it showcases advanced combat readiness.
  • The ship also supports Air Early Warning and Multi-Role helicopters, and is integrated with Network Centric Warfare systems for modern operational environments.
  • Measuring 125 metres and displacing 3,900 tonnes, the ship can exceed speeds of 30 knots and has completed rigorous sea trials in extreme Russian winter conditions.
