PM Visits Maldives to Mark 60 Years of Diplomatic Ties

On 25th July 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu in Male to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence and six decades of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives.

  • Strategic Vision: The leaders reviewed the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, adopted during President Muizzu’s 2024 visit to India.
  • Neighbourhood First: PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening ties under the Neighbourhood First and Vision MAHASAGAR doctrines.
  • Support in Crises: President Muizzu acknowledged India’s role as the “first responder” during crises. Both leaders discussed cooperation in infrastructure, health, climate action, and disaster preparedness.
  • Maritime Security: Reviewed collaboration under the Colombo Security Conclave to strengthen regional maritime security.
  • Trade & Investment: PM Modi emphasized finalising a Free Trade Agreement and Bilateral Investment Treaty. Digital initiatives like UPI, RuPay, and local currency trade were also discussed.
  • MoUs Signed: Six MoUs were exchanged in the areas of fisheries, meteorology, digital public infrastructure, pharmacopoeia, aquaculture, and a new concessional Line of Credit.
  • Financial Support: A Rs. 4,850 crore (USD 550 million) Line of Credit was announced. Maldives’ annual loan repayment was reduced by 40%, from USD 51 million to USD 29 million.
  • Infrastructure Projects: Joint inauguration of a roads and drainage project in Addu City and six High Impact Community Development Projects.
  • Medical Diplomacy: India gifted two Aarogya Maitri Health Cubes (BHISHM), each capable of treating 200 casualties and sustaining 6 personnel for 72 hours.
  • Environmental Initiatives: Leaders planted mango saplings as part of India’s “Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam” and Maldives’ “Pledge of 5 Million Trees.”
