  • 18 Aug 2025

On 17th August 2025, the sea phase of the twelfth edition of the Sri Lanka–India Naval Exercise (SLINEX-25) commenced, in western waters off Colombo, with warships from both nations participating in complex maritime operations.

  • The exercise involves two Indian Navy ships—fleet tanker INS Jyoti and destroyer INS Rana—operating alongside Sri Lanka Navy’s SLNS Vijayabahu and SLNS Sayura in a demonstration of growing maritime cooperation.
  • Over the next two days, the participating warships will carry out high-intensity naval manoeuvres, including Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations, gunnery drills, and coordinated screening exercises designed to enhance interoperability.
  • Vertical replenishment, fuelling approaches, and flashing exercises are part of the agenda, enabling the two navies to practice seamless logistical support and maritime sustainment during prolonged operations at sea.
  • The ongoing sea phase follows a three-day harbour phase conducted at Colombo Port from August 14 to 16, which served as a preparatory and confidence-building stage for both sides.
  • During the harbour phase, operational teams engaged in structured joint briefings on communications and security protocols, while also sharing best practices for maritime operations in the Indian Ocean region.
