US, South Korea, Japan Begin Freedom Edge Drills

On 15th September 2025, the United States, South Korea, and Japan commenced joint air and naval exercises named “Freedom Edge” off South Korea’s Jeju Island, which will continue until 19th Sept amid condemnation from North Korea.

  • The Freedom Edge manoeuvres are designed to enhance ballistic-missile defence capabilities, air-defence scenarios, and overall trilateral military coordination among the allied nations.
  • South Korea’s Defence Ministry stated that the exercises aim to improve the allies’ readiness to counter the growing nuclear and missile threats posed by North Korea, thereby strengthening regional security.
  • The US Indo-Pacific Command described the drills as the most advanced demonstration of trilateral defence cooperation to date, highlighting the scale and technological sophistication of the military operations.
