India, FAO Partner to Develop Smart Blue Ports

On 18th September 2025, the Department of Fisheries (DoF), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, signed a Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to strengthen Blue Port infrastructure in India, marking the launch of a new capacity-building series with its first webinar.

  • The DoF and FAO have entered into a Technical Cooperation Programme that will provide technical support to strengthen India’s fishing port capacities, with a focus on addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges in the aquatic value chain.
  • The first webinar under this programme, themed “Foundations of a Blue Port: Generating Value in Fishing Ports,” was addressed by Secretary of the DoF, and attended by FAO Representative in India, along with international and national stakeholders.
  • Three Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbours are being developed under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) at Gujarat, Daman & Diu, and Puducherry with a total investment of ₹369.8 crores, demonstrating the government’s commitment to modernizing fisheries infrastructure.
