First Indigenously Designed Software Defined Radios (SDRs)
- 29 Oct 2025
On 28th October 2025, the Indian Army signed a contract for the procurement of its first indigenously designed and manufactured Software Defined Radios (SDRs), developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
Key Points
- Indigenous Development: The SDRs have been designed by DRDO and manufactured by BEL, marking a significant step in India’s defence indigenisation and self-reliance efforts.
- Technological Capabilities: Equipped with high data rates and Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) features, the SDRs will enable secure, real-time communication and bolster the Army’s readiness in network-centric warfare environments.
- Operational Impact: These advanced radios will enhance information sharing, situational awareness, and mission coordination across units and terrains.
- IRSA Standard: Earlier this month, DRDO, in collaboration with the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and Tri-Services, released the Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA) 1.0 to promote interoperability in military communications.
- Technical Framework: IRSA defines standardised interfaces, APIs, and execution environments, ensuring waveform portability, interoperability, and certification compliance across all branches of the Armed Forces.
