On 30th October 2025, Union Law and Justice Minister announced that President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), with effect from November 24, 2025, following the retirement of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai on November 23.

  • The appointment of Justice Surya Kant as the Chief Justice of India was made in accordance with clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution, under which the President exercises her constitutional authority to appoint the CJI.
  • Justice Kant, currently a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, will succeed Justice B.R. Gavai and become the 53rd Chief Justice of India; his tenure will last till February 9, 2027.
  • As per long-standing judicial convention, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court is appointed as the Chief Justice of India, and Justice Gavai had earlier recommended Justice Kant’s name for the position.
