  • 27 Nov 2025

On 26th November 2025, India described the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) as a pivotal tool for expanding fair, technology-driven climate action, as Environment Minister participated in the 11th JCM Partner Countries’ Meeting on the sidelines of the UN climate summit in Belem, Brazil.

Key Points

  • About the JCM: A mechanism enabling partner countries, including India, to collaborate with Japan on low-carbon projects and share resulting carbon credits to meet national climate goals.
  • Technology Transfer & Investment: The JCM promotes the deployment of advanced low-carbon technologies, mobilises green finance, and supports sustainable development in partner nations.
  • Growing Global Mechanism: Japan informed that 31 partner countries and over 280 projects are now operating under the JCM, aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
  • Alignment with Paris Agreement: The India–Japan Memorandum of Cooperation (August 2025) reinforces the JCM as a transparent, collaborative framework for joint mitigation projects, finance mobilisation, and credit allocation.
  • Supporting India’s Climate Goals: The mechanism will directly contribute to India's NDCs and Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy, with low-carbon technologies approved by India’s Article 6 National Designated Agency.
