  • 27 Nov 2025

On 26th November 2025, the Ministry of Textiles announced a milestone project under the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), unveiling India’s first scientific system for dignified recycling of retired national flags and high-performance aramid fibres.

  • The project has established the Atal Centre of Textile Recycling and Sustainability in Panipat under IIT Delhi, creating India’s first dedicated hub for advanced textile recycling research and innovation.
  • The initiative integrates national objectives with technological advancement through two major programmes—the National Flag Recycling Initiative and the Aramid Fibre Recycling Programme.
  • Punjab, Haryana and Delhi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) will organise a demonstration event on 28 November 2025 in Panipat to showcase cutting-edge technologies developed under the mission and to engage industry and government stakeholders.
  • For the first time, India now has a structured, scientifically validated model to ensure dignified disposal and recycling of retired national flags, enabling preservation or respectful repurposing without compromising their sanctity.
  • The new system aligns with the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign by reinforcing responsible stewardship of the national flag while promoting sustainability within the technical textiles ecosystem.
