On 4th December 2025, International Cheetah Day, Prime Minister greeted wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists while highlighting India’s achievements under Project Cheetah to restore the species and revive its ecological heritage.

  • Prime Minister emphasised that Project Cheetah, launched three years ago, aims not only to safeguard the species but also to rejuvenate the broader ecosystem in which cheetahs can thrive.
  • The Prime Minister credited the progress in cheetah conservation to the support of citizens, particularly the efforts of Cheetah Mitras who work closely with forest authorities to ensure the well-being of the animals.
  • He reaffirmed that wildlife protection and harmonious coexistence with nature are integral to India’s civilisational ethos, a belief reflected in the nation’s sustained conservation initiatives.
  • As of December 2025, India hosts 32 cheetahs, including 21 born in the country, marking a significant recovery after the species was reintroduced in phases during 2022 and 2023.
