India Accelerates Naval Indigenisation Drive

  • 04 Dec 2025

On 4th December 2025, India marked Navy Day, highlighting the Navy’s rapid transformation under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and its long-term Vision 2047 to build a fully indigenous, technology-driven maritime force.

  • The Indian Navy’s Vision 2047 outlines a strategic pathway to achieve a completely indigenous and technologically advanced fleet, driven by innovation, systematic indigenisation, and the integration of emerging technologies across platforms and systems.
  • The commissioning of INS Mahe on November 24, 2025, and the induction of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri earlier in August demonstrate the Navy’s steady progress in expanding its domestically built fleet.
  • Indian shipyards have delivered over 40 indigenous warships and submarines in the past decade, achieving an impressive induction rate of one new vessel every 40 days in the last year.
  • India’s maritime geography—spanning a coastline of 11,098 kilometres and an Exclusive Economic Zone of 2.4 million sq. km—makes indigenisation vital for operational autonomy, logistical security, and the protection of trade routes that handle 90 percent of India’s trade and 80 percent of essential freight.
