National Consumer Day 2025

  • 24 Dec 2025

On 24th December 2025, India observed National Consumer Day, reaffirming its commitment to protecting consumer rights and strengthening grievance redressal mechanisms.

  • The day commemorates the presidential assent to the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, which laid the foundation for a structured consumer rights framework in the country.
  • The theme for 2025, “Efficient and Speedy Disposal through Digital Justice,” reflects the government’s focus on technology-driven, accessible and timely resolution of consumer disputes.
  • The Consumer Protection Act, 2019, in force since July 2020, replaced the 1986 law and introduced a modern framework to address emerging marketplace and digital economy challenges.
  • Consumer disputes are addressed through a three-tier system comprising District Commissions, State Commissions and the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
  • In July 2025, ten states and the NCDRC recorded disposal rates above 100%, indicating faster case disposal than new filings.
