INSV Kaundinya to Undertake Maiden Overseas Voyage

  • 24 Dec 2025

On 29th December 2025, INSV Kaundinya will undertake her maiden overseas voyage, marking a major milestone in reviving India’s ancient shipbuilding and seafaring traditions.

  • The vessel will be flagged off from Porbandar, Gujarat, and will sail to Muscat, Oman, symbolically retracing historic maritime routes that linked India with the Indian Ocean region for centuries.
  • INSV Kaundinya is inspired by depictions of ancient Indian ships and has been constructed entirely using traditional stitched-plank shipbuilding techniques.
  • Unlike modern vessels, its wooden planks are stitched together using coconut coir rope and sealed with natural resins, reflecting indigenous maritime technology once prevalent along India’s coastline.
  • Historically, the stitched-ship construction method enabled Indian mariners to undertake long-distance voyages to West Asia, Africa and Southeast Asia well before the advent of modern navigation and metallurgy.
  • The vessel has been built under a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Culture, the Indian Navy, and Hodi Innovations.
