India Releases New BIS Standard for Incense Sticks

On 24th December 2025, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi released a new Indian Standard for incense sticks (agarbatti) in New Delhi, aimed at improving consumer safety, indoor air quality and product quality.

- New Standard: IS 19412:2025 - Incense Sticks (Agarbatti) - Specification, developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
- Health & Safety Focus: Prohibits harmful insecticides such as alethrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin and fipronil.
- Product Classification: Agarbattis classified into machine-made, hand-made and traditional masala categories.
