  • 05 Jan 2026

On 4th January 2026, World Braille Day was observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the creator of the Braille system.

  • Braille is a tactile reading and writing code that enables persons with visual impairment to read using their fingertips through a system of six raised dots.
  • Louis Braille, a French innovator, developed the Braille system in 1824. He was born on 4 January 1809.
  • Today, Braille is used worldwide in multiple languages and supports visually impaired individuals in reading books, solving mathematical and scientific problems, learning music and managing daily activities.
  • In India, the National Federation of the Blind organised a commemorative function in New Delhi to mark the occasion.
  • The Federation also launched a joint Braille awareness campaign titled “More Braille, More Empowerment”, aimed at promoting equality, dignity and social inclusion of visually impaired persons.
