Somnath Temple

On 5th January 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Somnath Temple’s survival over the past one thousand years reflects India’s indomitable civilisational spirit and unbroken cultural continuity.

In an Op-Ed marking 1,000 years since the first attack on Somnath in 1026, the Prime Minister said the very word Somnath instils pride and stands as an eternal proclamation of India’s soul.
He noted that the temple, located at Prabhas Patan on Gujarat’s western coast, continues to stand tall despite repeated attacks and immense adversity.
He stressed that Somnath’s story is not merely about a temple, but about the unbreakable courage of generations of Indians who safeguarded Bharat’s culture and civilisation.
