TERI Releases Report on India’s PV Manufacturing
- 12 Jan 2026
On 9th January 2026, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) released a landmark report titled “India’s PV Manufacturing & Its Strategic Inflection Points” at the Bharat Climate Forum 2026 in New Delhi, outlining critical steps to strengthen India’s solar manufacturing ecosystem.
Key Points:
- Report Launch: The report was released during the launch of India’s National Cleantech Manufacturing Implementation Plan at Bharat Climate Forum 2026, held at ITC Maurya, New Delhi.
- Strategic Focus: The study provides a macro-level assessment of India’s solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing value chain, identifying key policy, financing, and industrial interventions.
- Solar Potential Highlighted: TERI highlighted India’s vast solar potential of over 10,800 GW, spanning ground-mounted, rooftop, and emerging deployment pathways.
- Manufacturing Gap: While India has built strong module manufacturing capacity, the report flagged critical upstream vulnerabilities, including near-total dependence on imports for polysilicon and wafers.
- Supply Chain Risks: Heavy reliance on imported manufacturing equipment and tool chains was identified as a major chokepoint, exposing the sector to geopolitical and supply-chain risks.
- Financing Needs: The report stressed the importance of affordable blended finance, including Green-PV bonds, concessional debt, and risk-mitigation instruments to support upstream investments.
- Infrastructure Recommendations: It recommended the creation of Solar–Semicon Technology Parks, shared pilot fabrication facilities, and stronger R&D ecosystems.
- Skilling and Inclusion: The study proposed a dedicated PV–Semicon Skill Council, with incentives linked to workforce development and greater participation of women in manufacturing.
