India to Roll Out V2V Technology by 2026
- 12 Jan 2026
In January 2026, the Government of India announced that it is preparing to roll out Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technology by the end of 2026.
- The initiative aims to enhance road safety by reducing accidents through direct communication between vehicles, without relying on network connectivity.
Key Points:
- Rollout Timeline: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is working to notify Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technology by the end of 2026, followed by phased implementation.
- Purpose of V2V System: The system is designed to enhance road safety by allowing vehicles to exchange real-time signals and alerts when another vehicle comes dangerously close.
- Accident Prevention: V2V technology is expected to significantly reduce accidents involving parked vehicles, rear-end collisions, and multi-vehicle pileups during dense fog, especially in winter months.
- How the System Works: The technology will function through a SIM-like device installed in vehicles, enabling direct, network-independent communication.
- 360-Degree Alerts: Vehicles will receive real-time alerts from all sides, warning drivers about unsafe distances, approaching vehicles, and nearby stationary or roadside vehicles.
- Fog and Low Visibility Use: The system will be particularly effective during foggy conditions, when visibility drops sharply and traditional visual cues fail.
- Integration with ADAS: V2V will work in coordination with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), aligning even premium vehicles that currently rely on sensor-based systems.
- Cost and Implementation: The project is estimated to cost around ₹5,000 crore; while consumers will bear some cost, pricing details are yet to be finalised.
