On 12th February 2026, Veteran Doordarshan newsreader Sarla Maheshwari passed away at the age of 71, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Indian television journalism.
- She began her career in 1976 as a news announcer with Doordarshan while pursuing her PhD at Delhi University and later became one of the earliest anchors to present live television news in India.
- Maheshwari worked with Doordarshan until 1984, served as a newsreader with the BBC in the UK until 1986, and rejoined Doordarshan in 1988, continuing her distinguished career for nearly 3 decades.
- Known for her calm, formal, and composed style, she became a familiar and respected presence in Indian households during the era of black-and-white and early colour television.
