Geological Survey of India

On 4th March 2026, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) celebrated its 176th Foundation Day.

The commemorative ceremony was held in Hyderabad.
GSI plays a crucial role in the exploration of deep-seated and critical minerals needed for modern technological and industrial demands.
Former Director General M. Sridhar reflected on the institution’s evolution from its 19th-century origins focused on coal discovery to its present leadership in advanced geoscientific technologies.
He emphasised the importance of expanding work in marine geology and geosciences serving public welfare.
Established in 1851, the GSI is the world’s second-oldest geological organisation.
