On 14th March 2026, the Government revoked the detention of Sonam Wangchuk.

  • He had been detained under the National Security Act in September 2025.
  • The decision was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • Sonam Wangchuk is a Ladakhi innovator, education reformer, and environmental activist.
  • In 1988, Wangchuk co-founded the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) with his brothers and colleagues.
  • He is internationally known for the Ice Stupa project, an artificial glacier that conserves water in arid Himalayan regions.
  • Wangchuk has received global recognition, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018, for his contributions to sustainable development.
