Sonam Wangchuk

On 14th March 2026, the Government revoked the detention of Sonam Wangchuk.

He had been detained under the National Security Act in September 2025.
The decision was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Sonam Wangchuk is a Ladakhi innovator, education reformer, and environmental activist.
In 1988, Wangchuk co-founded the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) with his brothers and colleagues.
He is internationally known for the Ice Stupa project, an artificial glacier that conserves water in arid Himalayan regions.
Wangchuk has received global recognition, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018, for his contributions to sustainable development.
