On 26th April 2026, veteran Indian photographer Raghu Rai passed away at the age of 83 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

  • Born in 1942 in Jhang (now in Pakistan), he became one of India’s most celebrated photographers.
  • His work is regarded as a visual chronicle of modern India.
  • He gained global recognition for documenting major events such as the Bangladesh Liberation War and the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
  • He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972.
  • Rai was named Photographer of the Year in the US in 1992.
  • He received the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts Photography Award in 2019.
  • In 2017, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
