Raghu Rai

On 26th April 2026, veteran Indian photographer Raghu Rai passed away at the age of 83 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Born in 1942 in Jhang (now in Pakistan), he became one of India’s most celebrated photographers.
His work is regarded as a visual chronicle of modern India.
He gained global recognition for documenting major events such as the Bangladesh Liberation War and the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972.
Rai was named Photographer of the Year in the US in 1992.
He received the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts Photography Award in 2019.
In 2017, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
