  • 04 May 2026

On 2nd May 2026, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched the Cell Broadcast Alert System with support from National Disaster Management Authority.

  • It is designed to deliver real-time disaster, emergency and public safety alerts directly to citizens’ mobile phones.
  • A nationwide test was conducted, during which users received emergency alert messages with a beep sound.
  • The system enables rapid dissemination of warnings during natural disasters, severe weather events and other emergencies.
  • Alerts are transmitted via the indigenous ‘SACHET’ platform developed by Centre for Development of Telematics.
  • It is based on the Common Alerting Protocol recommended by the International Telecommunication Union.
  • The system can send alerts for events such as tsunamis, earthquakes, lightning strikes and man-made hazards like gas leaks.
  • Alerts are delivered with loud alarm tones and flashing messages to ensure visibility and immediate attention.
  • Once fully operational, the system will deliver multilingual alerts across all mobile handsets nationwide.
