India and Jamaica Sign Three MoUs

India and Jamaica signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in health cooperation, solarisation, and broadcasting during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s official visit to Jamaica from May 2 to 4, 2026, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and development partnership.

- Review of Existing Projects: Both sides assessed ongoing collaborations in digital transformation, sports, culture, and digital payments.
- India-UN Development Partnership: The “Improving Rural Livelihoods” project in Kitson Town, implemented with the FAO under the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, benefited over 200 Jamaicans.
- Disaster Recovery Assistance: India reaffirmed support for Jamaica’s recovery from Hurricane Melissa by providing 10 BHISHM emergency medical units.
- Additional Assistance: India announced a supply of 30 dialysis units, 40 fishing boats with engines, and 200 GPS devices to support healthcare and livelihoods.
- Artisan Empowerment Hub: Both countries explored establishing an Artisan Empowerment Hub under the India-CARICOM development partnership framework.
- Priority Cooperation Sectors: Discussions focused on healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, tourism, education, digitalisation, and capacity building.
- Expanded Training Support: India increased ITEC defence training slots for Jamaica from 6 to 34 and promoted ICCR scholarships and digital learning initiatives like E-Vidyabharati and iGOT Karmyogi.
- Multilateral Coordination: India and Jamaica reaffirmed cooperation on issues related to the Global South, climate justice, climate finance, and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
- UNSC Support: India appreciated Jamaica’s support for India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for 2028-29.
- Counter-Terrorism Cooperation: Both sides condemned terrorism and reiterated support for the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT).
