On 9th May 2026, Kuljeet Kaur Marhas became the first Indian woman to be elected Fellow of the Meteoritical Society.
- She was elected as a Fellow for 2026 in recognition of her exceptional contributions to meteoritics, cosmochemistry and planetary science.
- Prof. Marhas is a professor in the Planetary Science Division at the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad.
- Founded in 1933, the Meteoritical Society is one of the world’s most prestigious scientific bodies dedicated to the study of meteorites and planetary materials.
- In the society’s 93-year history, Prof. Marhas is only the third Indian scientist to receive this honour after Devendra Lal and J N Goswami.
- She is internationally recognised for pioneering research on short-lived radionuclides and stable isotopes found in extraterrestrial materials.
- Her work includes studies on pre-solar grains, Calcium-Aluminum-rich Inclusions (CAIs), chondrules and meteorite organic matter.
