Urban Unemployment Falls to 6.6%: PLFS

On 11th May 2026, the government released the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data showing that India’s urban unemployment rate declined slightly to 6.6% during the January-March 2026 quarter, while rural unemployment increased to 4.3%.

- Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR): Overall LFPR stood at 55.5%, slightly lower than 55.8% in the October-December 2025 quarter.
- Urban and Rural LFPR: Urban LFPR declined marginally to 50.2%, while rural LFPR eased to 58.2%.
- Female Labour Participation: Overall female LFPR remained nearly stable at 34.7%, with rural female LFPR at 39.2% and urban female LFPR at 25.4%.
- Worker Population Ratio (WPR): Overall WPR declined slightly to 52.8% from 53.1% in the previous quarter.
- Growth in Rural Salaried Jobs: Regular wage and salaried employment in rural areas increased to 15.5% from 14.8%.
- Decline in Rural Self-Employment: The share of self-employed workers in rural areas decreased to 62.5% from 63.2%.
- Shift Away from Agriculture: Employment in agriculture declined to 55.8% from 58.5% in rural areas.
- Rise in Secondary and Tertiary Sectors: Rural employment in the tertiary sector rose to 21.7%, while the secondary sector increased to 22.6%.
- Total Employment: Around 57.4 crore persons aged 15 years and above were employed during the January-March 2026 quarter.
- PLFS Coverage: The survey collected data from 5,61,822 individuals across rural and urban India.
