On 13th May 2026, the Centre extended the tenure of Praveen Sood by one more year as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
- This marks his second extension in office.
- The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension beyond May 24, 2026, based on the recommendations of the selection committee.
- Praveen Sood took charge as CBI Director on May 25, 2023, for an initial two-year term and had received a one-year extension earlier.
- The decision followed a meeting of the selection committee headed by the Prime Minister, and comprising Chief justice of India and the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.
- The CBI functions under the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) and investigates major corruption, economic and special crimes cases across India.
