New Lizard Species Mesalina bishnoi Discovered

In June 2026, scientists reported the discovery of a new lizard species, Mesalina bishnoi, from Rajasthan.

  • The species was discovered near Gajner in Bikaner district and formally described by researchers from the Zoological Survey of India and collaborating institutions.
  • The species was named Mesalina bishnoi in recognition of the Bishnoi community's long-standing commitment to wildlife and environmental conservation.
  • It is a small-bodied lizard with a snout–vent length of about 39.2 mm.
  • It exhibits greyish to olive-brown colouration with distinctive dorsolateral stripes extending from the neck towards the tail.
  • The species has black markings behind the eyes and irregular dark blotches mixed with white spots across the body.
  • The underside is pale grey to off-white.
  • The species inhabits arid landscapes characterized by rocky soil and sparse desert vegetation.
