On 2nd June 2026, the Ministry of Education invited applications for the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026, aimed at attracting distinguished Indian-origin researchers and professionals from across the world to strengthen India’s research and innovation ecosystem.
Key Points
- Objective: The scheme seeks to connect global Indian talent with India’s premier higher education institutions, research centres, and national laboratories.
- Target Beneficiaries: Eligible applicants include Indian nationals working abroad, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders, and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) with notable research achievements.
- Priority Sectors: The scheme focuses on 13 strategic areas, including Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing, Semiconductors, Biotechnology, Cybersecurity, Healthcare, Space, Defence, Climate Change, Advanced Materials, Communications, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Blue Economy, and Atomic Energy.

- oResearch Chairs
- Eligible Host Institutions: Top-ranked NIRF institutions and research organisations under DST, DBT, ICMR, and CSIR are eligible to participate.
