Centre Unveils Cooperative Sector Roadmap

On 25th June 2026, at the 8th National Conference on Cooperation held in Srinagar, the Ministry of Cooperation outlined the next phase of cooperative sector reforms, focusing on technology, professional management, sustainability and grassroots development.

Key Points:

  • Digital Transformation: Cooperative banks have been urged to adopt modern digital platforms, including UPI-enabled services, while the upcoming National Cooperative Database 2.0 will strengthen data-driven governance.
  • Strengthening PACS: The conference reviewed progress in the computerisation of Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), adoption of model bye-laws and expansion of multipurpose PACS, dairy and fishery cooperatives.
  • World's Largest Grain Storage Plan: States were asked to accelerate infrastructure creation under the Grain Storage Plan to reduce post-harvest losses and improve storage capacity.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Cooperatives were encouraged to promote circular economy practices by converting rural waste into value through sectors such as dairy, compressed biogas and sugar by-products.
  • National Cooperatives: The conference highlighted the role of National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL), National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL) and Bharatiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) in strengthening national value chains for exports, organic products and seeds.
