Microporellus kolhapurensis Discovered in Maharashtra

In July 2026, researchers discovered a new species of polypore (bracket) fungus, named Microporellus kolhapurensis, in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, adding to the biodiversity of the Western Ghats.
- The new fungal species was discovered in Bhudargad taluka of Kolhapur district and named Microporellus kolhapurensis after the district.
- The fungus was found growing on rotting wood.
- It is a saprotrophic fungus, which derives nutrients by decomposing dead and decaying organic matter, thereby playing an important role in nutrient recycling in forest ecosystems.
