Snakebite a Notifiable Disease

On 18th August 2026, the Maharashtra government declared snakebite a notifiable disease, making reporting of cases mandatory.

All hospitals, medical colleges and healthcare professionals must report suspected or confirmed snakebite cases and deaths.
Serious or fatal cases must be reported immediately through available communication systems.
Cases will be recorded through the Health Management Information System and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme.
The measure aims to strengthen surveillance, ensure timely treatment and improve availability of anti-snake venom (ASV).
Health institutions must maintain updated records of ASV received, used and available in stock.
Patient records will include details of the bite, symptoms, treatment, ASV doses, outcome and fatalities.
