Snakebite a Notifiable Disease

On 18th August 2026, the Maharashtra government declared snakebite a notifiable disease, making reporting of cases mandatory.
- All hospitals, medical colleges and healthcare professionals must report suspected or confirmed snakebite cases and deaths.
- Serious or fatal cases must be reported immediately through available communication systems.
- Cases will be recorded through the Health Management Information System and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme.
- The measure aims to strengthen surveillance, ensure timely treatment and improve availability of anti-snake venom (ASV).
- Health institutions must maintain updated records of ASV received, used and available in stock.
- Patient records will include details of the bite, symptoms, treatment, ASV doses, outcome and fatalities.
