MoU Signed for Estimation of Monthly Consumption Expenditure

On August 31, 2026, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Punjab, to undertake a research study aimed at developing a predictive and analytical framework for monthly consumption expenditure in India.

The collaboration aims to leverage Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) data by estimating Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE) at the national and state levels.
It also aims to analyse household consumption patterns, and generate evidence for poverty estimation and macroeconomic planning.
This initiative marks another step towards the innovative application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in official statistics.
