INS Nipun Commissioned into the Indian Navy

On 31st August 2026, the Indian Navy commissioned INS Nipun, the second Diving Support Vessel (DSV) of the Nistar Class, at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. The induction strengthens the Navy’s deep-sea diving, underwater intervention and submarine rescue capabilities.

Indigenous Construction: INS Nipun was designed and built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam, reflecting India’s growing capability in building complex specialist naval platforms.
Deep-Sea Operations: The vessel is designed for deep-sea diving and underwater operations, including saturation, air and heliox diving.
Advanced Systems: It is equipped with remotely operated underwater systems, a specialised diving complex, dynamic positioning capability and life-support and medical facilities.
Submarine Rescue: INS Nipun can support submarine rescue operations, significantly improving the Navy’s response to underwater emergencies.
Specialist Capability: Along with her sister ship INS Nistar, it enhances capabilities in diving, underwater intervention, salvage and submarine rescue.
Strategic Significance: The vessel is a major step towards Aatmanirbharta in defence shipbuilding and strengthens India’s indigenous maritime capability.
