Indigenous Fleet Support Ship 'Surya' Launched in Visakhapatnam

On October 6, 2026, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the Navy's first indigenous Fleet Support Ship, 'INS Surya', at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam.
Key Highlights
- Infrastructure Upgrade: On this occasion, the keel was laid for the fifth Fleet Support Ship (FSS-5), and an upgraded Slipway-4 along with a 300-tonne capacity Goliath crane were inaugurated.
- Strategic Capability: Indigenously built by HSL, this 43,500-tonne vessel will strengthen the Navy's reach, logistics supply, and operational capacity in the Indian Ocean.
- Self-Reliant Manufacturing: Built under 'Make in India', the modern slipway and crane now enable HSL to build large vessels up to 45,000 DWT.
