Centre extends Rs 300 per LPG cylinder subsidy to Ujjwala Yojana women beneficiaries for FY 2024-25.

  • The move aims to benefit around 10 crore families and will cost the government Rs 12,000 crore.
  • Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), launched in 2016, provides deposit-free LPG connections to adult women of poor households.
  • Initially, beneficiaries had to purchase LPG refills at market price; the subsidy was increased from Rs 200 to Rs 300 per cylinder in October 2023.
  • The targeted subsidy scheme encourages continuous LPG usage, resulting in a 20% increase in average consumption among PMUY beneficiaries from 2019-20 to 2021-22.
