Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs)

On 9th April, Admiral inaugurated a 350m long major pier for Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and residential accommodation at Naval Base Karwar.

  • These developments are part of Phase IIA of Project Seabird, aiming to accommodate 32 ships and submarines, among other facilities.
  • The Pier 3 OPV Pier is equipped to berth OPVs, large survey vessels, and mine countermeasure vessels, offering various shore-based services.
  • The residential accommodation includes two towers for married officers, single officers, and Defence civilians, along with amenities and external services.
  • Once Phase IIA is complete, Naval Base Karwar will accommodate around 10,000 personnel and boost the local economy.
  • The project has created thousands of direct and indirect jobs and aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by sourcing over 90% of materials domestically.
  • Navy chief also flagged off an outreach programme named ‘SAMPARK 3.0’ and inaugurated new married accommodation for Defence Security Corps (DSC) personnel.
