RBI Operationalises ‘.bank.in’ Domain for Banks
- 30 Apr 2025
On 27th April 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) launched the operationalisation of the ‘.bank.in’ domain for all banks, aiming to strengthen cybersecurity and curb rising digital payment frauds.
Key Points
- Exclusive Domain: Banks must migrate to the ‘.bank.in’ domain by 31st October 2025, with the transition aimed at improving online security and minimizing fraud risks.
- Current Domain Use: Banks currently use domains like ‘.com’ or ‘.co.in’, which are more generic and prone to phishing attacks.
- Operationalisation Body: The Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) will serve as the exclusive registrar under RBI's guidance.
- Cybersecurity Focus: The new domain will make it harder for fraudsters to register similar-looking domains, reducing phishing and fraudulent activities.
- Fraud Statistics: Internet and card frauds accounted for around 85% of digital fraud cases in 2023-24, with a significant portion related to fake bank websites.
- Rationale: This initiative is part of broader efforts to address the surge in cyber threats associated with increased digitalisation in the financial sector.
