India to Chair IORA from 2025–2027

On 21st May 2025, India participated in the 24th Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Council of Ministers Meeting, reaffirming its commitment to regional peace, sustainability, and cooperation.

  • The 24th IORA Council of Ministers Meeting was hosted virtually by Sri Lanka under the theme “Sustainable Indian Ocean for Future Generation,” with participation from all 22 Member States and 12 Dialogue Partners.
  • India, currently serving as IORA’s Vice-Chair and part of the Troika, was represented by Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Mr. P. Kumaran, and is set to assume Chairship for the 2025–2027 term.
  • The meeting featured discussions on enhancing regional cooperation, institutional strengthening of IORA, and pressing geopolitical and developmental challenges within the Indian Ocean Region.
  • Member States unanimously adopted the ‘Colombo Communiqué,’ outlining shared priorities and reaffirming their commitment to sustainable development, maritime safety, and inclusive regional growth.
