India Marks 150 Years of Metre Convention

On 20th May 2025, India celebrated World Metrology Day 2025 by announcing major reforms in legal metrology, reinforcing consumer protection, trade fairness, and alignment with international measurement standards.

  • India has become the 13th country authorized to issue OIML (International Organization of Legal Metrology) certificates, boosting the global credibility of Indian manufacturers and enabling broader access to international markets.
  • To ensure fairness in high-value gold transactions, the government has mandated the use of 1 mg precision balances in gold and jewellery trade, aimed at eliminating discrepancies and protecting consumer rights.
  • The “One Nation, One Time” initiative under the Draft IST Rules, 2025 will deliver Indian Standard Time with millisecond-level accuracy from five regional laboratories, enhancing synchronization across telecom, banking, and transport sectors.
  • The newly launched eMaap portal, already integrated with 18 states, digitizes licensing, registration, and enforcement processes to reduce bureaucracy and promote transparency in legal metrology governance.
