India to Build First Polar Research Vessel

On 3rd June 2025, India signed a landmark MoU with Norwegian firm Kongsberg to build its first-ever Polar Research Vessel (PRV), marking a major leap in oceanic research and indigenous shipbuilding.

- Historic Collaboration: The MoU was signed between GRSE (Kolkata) and Kongsberg (Norway) during the Nor-Shipping 2025 event, in the presence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
- PRV Development: Designed by Kongsberg and constructed by GRSE, the vessel will serve India’s NCPOR for polar and Southern Ocean research.
- Research Capabilities: The PRV will host advanced scientific instruments to support marine ecosystem studies and climate change monitoring.

- Global Outreach: Minister engaged with the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association (NSA), encouraging investment and crew recruitment from India’s seafaring workforce.
