Rare Insect Ballistura fitchoides Rediscovered

  • 10 Jun 2025

In June 2025, researchers from the Government Arts College, Udhagamandalam, have found Ballistura fitchoides, a rare springtail insect (Collembola) last recorded in 1933 from the Nilgiris. The species' complete mitochondrial DNA has now been successfully sequenced.

Key Points

  • Historic Rediscovery: Originally described by French scientist J.R. Dennis in 1933 and renamed in 1944, Ballistura fitchoides was found again in Kolavayal, Wayanad, just 35 km from its original site in Tamil Nadu.
  • Lost Holotype, New Neotype: The original type specimen (holotype) stored in Paris was lost. The new specimen, found in decomposing plantain waste, is now designated as the neotype.
  • Genetic Milestone: This marks the first-ever complete mitochondrial genome sequencing of any Ballistura species globally, addressing taxonomic gaps in the genus.
  • Global Significance: Despite 21 known species worldwide, Ballistura lacked any genetic data—until now. This breakthrough could help resolve long-standing classification issues.
