Metal-Based Nanozyme for Blood-clotting Disorders
- 10 Jun 2025
In June 2025, researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, have developed a novel artificial nanozyme that shows promise in preventing abnormal blood clotting caused by conditions like pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE).
Key Points
- Nanozyme Innovation: The team created redox-active vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) nanozymes to mimic natural antioxidant enzymes.
- How It Works: These nanozymes reduce oxidative stress by scavenging Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which are responsible for over-activating platelets and causing excess clot formation.
- Efficient Design: Among various shapes and types tested, spherical-shaped V₂O₅ nanozymes were most effective in mimicking glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme that combats oxidative stress.
- Lab to Life: Tested on human platelets and in a mouse model of PTE, the nanozyme successfully reduced thrombosis without toxicity and improved survival rates.
- Future Plans: The research team plans to explore its application in ischemic stroke prevention and hopes to progress to clinical trials, citing success with human platelets.
