NHAI Releases 2023–24 Sustainability Report

On 15th July 2025, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) released its second consecutive Sustainability Report for FY 2023–24, underscoring its commitment to sustainable infrastructure and environmental responsibility.

Key Points

  • Emission Reduction: Despite a 20% increase in highway construction, NHAI reduced its Greenhouse Gas Emissions Intensity from 1.0 to 0.8 MTCO₂e/km.
  • Circular Economy: Over 631 lakh metric tonnes of recycled materials, including fly ash and plastic waste, were reused in construction.
  • Massive Plantation Drive: Since 2015, more than 4.69 crore saplings have been planted under the Green Highways Policy; over 56 lakh in FY 2023–24 alone.
  • Water Conservation: Under the Amrit Sarovar Mission, 467 water bodies were rejuvenated, yielding 2.4 crore cubic metres of soil and savings of Rs. 16,690 crore.
  • Water Use Efficiency: Water use intensity in water-stressed regions dropped by 74% from previous benchmarks.
  • Wildlife Protection: NHAI adopted best practices to mitigate highway impact on wildlife and reduce man-animal conflicts.
  • Workplace Safety: 100% of NHAI’s workforce is now covered under the Occupational Health and Safety Management Framework.
  • Tech Innovations: The AI-powered Data Lake 3.0 resolved 155 conciliation claims, saving Rs. 25,680 crore.
