Veteran Meghalaya Leader D.D. Lapang Passes Away

On 12th September 2025, former Meghalaya Chief Minister D.D. Lapang, one of the state’s longest-serving political figures, passed away at the age of 91 in Shillong.

  • Born on 10th April, 1934, in Ri-Bhoi district, Lapang’s life journey from modest beginnings to the helm of Meghalaya’s political leadership embodied perseverance, humility, and resilience.
  • Over the years, Lapang served in multiple ministerial roles and went on to become Chief Minister on four separate occasions between 1992 and 2008, reflecting his ability to navigate the complexities of coalition-driven politics in the state.
  • He was widely respected across party lines for his political acumen, consensus-building ability, and approachable demeanour, which helped him maintain stability during turbulent phases in Meghalaya’s political landscape.
