India Elected to UN Human Rights Council for Seventh Term

On 15th October 2025, India was elected unopposed to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for a three-year term starting 2026, marking its seventh tenure on the global body dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights.

- Unopposed Election: India secured a seat on the 47-member Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council with 177 votes out of 188 cast, despite being the only candidate for one of the Asia-Pacific regional seats.
- Philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: In its nomination, India underscored its guiding philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (“The world is one family”), reflecting its commitment to global unity, inclusivity, and mutual respect.

- Regional Representation: Asia-Pacific nations hold 17 of the 47 HRC seats, with four available this election cycle. India will represent the region alongside Pakistan, Vietnam, and Mauritius, which were also elected this year.
- Past Tenure: India last served on the HRC in 2024, completing two consecutive terms before taking a mandatory break, as UN rules prohibit serving more than two terms in succession.
