Digital System to Track Cough Syrup Ingredients
- 24 Oct 2025
On 23rd October 2025, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) launched a Digital Monitoring System to oversee the production, movement, and quality of high-risk pharmaceutical solvents after recent reports of contaminated cough syrups caused child deaths in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
- The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has rolled out a Digital Monitoring System on the Online National Drug Licensing System (ONDLS) portal to monitor and regulate the supply chain of high-risk ingredients used in cough syrups and other drug formulations.
- This initiative follows a series of tragic incidents in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, where the consumption of contaminated cough syrups containing diethylene glycol (DEG) was linked to multiple child deaths, raising nationwide concern about pharmaceutical safety standards.
- The new system will enable real-time digital tracking of the manufacturing, testing, and distribution of pharmaceutical-grade solvents such as glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol, polyethylene glycol, hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, maltitol, and ethyl alcohol.
