On 29th October 2025, the Ministry of Coal launched the 14th Round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions, marking a major step toward India’s goal of energy independence, cleaner coal utilization, and sustainable industrial development.

  • The 14th round of commercial coal mine auctions was inaugurated by Union Minister for Coal and Mines through video conferencing, with participation from senior officials, industry representatives, and key stakeholders in the coal sector.
  • A total of 41 coal mines have been offered for auction under this round, including 21 blocks identified for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) — a first-of-its-kind feature in India’s commercial mining framework.
  • Out of the 41 mines, 20 are fully explored while 21 are partially explored, offering investors a mix of low-risk and high-potential mining opportunities across different geological zones.
  • The list of coal blocks comprises five mines under the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015, and 36 mines under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, ensuring a broad legal foundation for transparent allocation.
